How to choose a location for your family photo session.
So, you’ve decided it’s time to update your family photos. Or maybe you have been excellent at scheduling photos annually but are tired of the same location. Here are some things to consider when choosing the spot for your session.
This park is almost completely contained and perfect for families with little ones who might run off or need to use the potty.
How old are your kids?
If you have toddlers, you might need easy access to restrooms. A home session will allow them to use a toilet they are familiar with and one that is easy for you to give them a hand if necessary. Do you want to be crouched in a small stall of a less-than-pristine public restroom and a scary auto-flush toilet when we are trying to create an stress-free session? Probably not.
If you have teens or young adults, think about the vibe that they want for their photos. Do they like a cool urban vibe? Are they into outdoor activities and want photos that reflect that?
What is the style of your home and decor?
I want you to have photos that can be on display in your house. Think about how the setting of your session will look inside your house. Do you have a minimalistic style? Let’s not clutter that with a setting that has a busy background. Do you have an impressive garden and indoor display of plants? A natural setting for your session may be just the ticket.
Do you have family member with mobility issues?
Let’s make sure we choose a spot that is both ADA compliant and beautiful.
Do you have a young child who is a runner or escape artist?
Let’s plan for a location that is nicely contained, away from streets and parking lots that could be a safety concern.
Do you want to pay a permit fee?
Many popular locations in our area require pricey photography permits for professional photos. They range from $300 to $1200. Here’s a list. https://www.lisaphelanphotography.com/location-permits
Do you want a quiet spot all to yourself?
While I absolutely LOVE shooting at El Matador Beach in Malibu, it is a zoo at sunset. There will always be a proposal taking place, multiple maternity shoots, some influencers making content and a family or two taking photos. I am able to work around that all! But, the mornings are empty and glorious.
What location did you choose last time?
Maybe you want to change up the vibes. Or do you want to stick with the vibes but experience a new spot?
You’d never know there were about 10 other photographers with clients on this beach during our session. If that will stress you out, let’s schedule your session in the morning.
I’ve got great news. When you inquire about a session with me, we will hop on the phone for a consult that will include a discussion about location and address all of these. I also have a curated visual location guide to help you make a decision.
